“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
We love this verse on mugs, journals, plaques, and graduation cards. But it wasn’t first written to people celebrating. It was written to people in exile.
God’s people had lost everything: their homes, their temple, their way of life. They were carried off to Babylon, a foreign city where nothing felt like home. And God didn’t tell them, “Hang on, I’ll get you out next week.” He told them it would be 70 years.
That’s where this promise was spoken. Not after Babylon. In Babylon.
Your Babylon
Maybe you know that place. A season you didn’t choose. A diagnosis, a loss, a job that ended, a prayer that hasn’t been answered yet. Babylon is anywhere you feel far from where you thought your life would be.
And here’s the good news: God doesn’t wait for you to leave Babylon before He speaks hope over you. His plans for you begin right where you are.
Before He gave the promise, God told the exiles to build houses, plant gardens, and seek the good of the city they lived in (Jeremiah 29:5–7). In other words: Don’t put your life on hold. I’m with you here. God is there with you!
Seeing Jesus in Babylon
This is where grace shines brightest. God didn’t just send a letter to His people in exile. In Jesus, He came Himself.
Jesus stepped into our broken world, our Babylon, to bring us home. He knew rejection, grief, and suffering. And through the cross and the empty tomb, He proved that God’s plans really are to give us “hope and a future.” Our future isn’t held together by our strength. It’s held by His grace.
Just two verses later, God makes another promise: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). Jesus is the answer to that search. He is God, findable, even in exile, even in our back-of-the-mountain circumstances. Do you see God in the grace, the continued provision, His continued presence and mighty move of mercy and miracles. Yes, seek for Him- and surely you will find Him.

Hope for Today
You may still be in Babylon. But you are not forgotten, and you are not alone. The same God who wrote to the exiles is writing hope into your story today.
So plant something. Pray something. Take one faithful step. Your hope and your future are in good hands.
Reflect: Where is your Babylon right now? What would it look like to trust God there, not just after?
Pray: Lord, thank You that Your plans for me are good, even here. Help me see Jesus in this season and trust Your grace one day at a time. Amen.
