Hope

Hope is an optimistic state of mind. It’s the feeling that something you want will happen, that things will turn out for the best.

Some days that feeling comes easy. Other days you have to go looking for it.

Maybe you’re waiting on a phone call that hasn’t come. Maybe the bills came faster than the paycheck. Maybe you’re praying for someone you love and you can’t see any change yet. In seasons like that, hope can feel like something you either have or you don’t, like good weather or good luck.

But hope isn’t luck. And it isn’t wishful thinking either.

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13

Look at how Paul, the writer of the book of Romans says it. God isn’t just a giver of hope. He is the source of it. Hope isn’t something you have to manufacture on your own, squeezing it out of a tired heart. It’s something God fills you with.

And notice the order. Joy and peace come first, and they come because you trust in him. The overflow follows. That’s a relief, honestly. It means you don’t have to feel hopeful before you can be hopeful. You start by trusting, even a little, even shakily. God does the filling.

I love that word overflow. It’s not a trickle. It’s not just enough to get by. When God fills you, there’s more than you need. It spills over onto the people around you: the coworker who’s discouraged, the friend who’s been quiet lately, your own family at the dinner table. Your hope becomes theirs.

So if you’re running low today, don’t try harder. Ask.

Ask God to fill you. Trust him with the thing you can’t fix. Then watch for the joy and peace that start showing up in small ways a good night’s sleep, an unexpected kindness, the strength to get through one more day.

Confident hope isn’t the same as knowing how everything will work out. It’s knowing who holds it.

A prayer for today:
God, you are the source of my hope. I’m trusting you with what I can’t control. Fill me with joy and peace, and let it overflow into the lives around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
