God Is Still Working

Some seasons arrive without warning. A phone call changes your day. A door you were sure God opened suddenly closes. A plan you prayed over falls apart, and you are left standing in the pieces wondering what happened. If you are carrying disappointment today, I want you to hear this first: God has not stepped away from your story.

A Promise Written for Hard Days

Romans 8:28 in the New Living Translation says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

Read that slowly. Paul does not say everything is good. He does not pretend that loss, betrayal, illness, or delay feel pleasant. He says God causes everything to work together for good. That is a promise about what God does with the hard things, not a claim that the hard things are secretly easy.

Think about how a master craftsman works. A single piece of raw material might look rough or even useless on its own. In skilled hands, it becomes part of something beautiful. God is that kind of craftsman. Nothing you have walked through is wasted in His hands.

Joseph Knew This Truth

Few people in Scripture understood Romans 8:28 better than Joseph. His brothers betrayed him and sold him into slavery. He was falsely accused and forgotten in prison. For years, nothing about his life looked like a plan from a good God.

Yet when he finally stood face to face with the brothers who hurt him, he said, “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive” (Genesis 50:20, KJV). Joseph could not see it while he was in the pit or the prison. He could only see it looking back. God was working the whole time, even when the circumstances said otherwise.

When It Doesn’t Feel Like God Is Working

Let’s be honest. There are days when this verse is hard to believe. Disappointment has a way of shouting louder than promises. You may be thinking, “If God is working, why does it hurt this much?”

Scripture does not scold you for that question. Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit” (KJV). God does not wait for you to feel strong before He draws near. He comes close to the brokenhearted exactly as they are.

Notice also who the promise is for in Romans 8:28. It is for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. That means your story has a purpose behind it, even when you cannot trace the outline yet. You are not an accident, and neither is this season.

What God Is Doing Behind the Scenes

You may not see the full picture, but here is what Scripture invites you to trust while you wait.

God is working in you. Philippians 1:6 says, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (KJV). The disappointing season is not interrupting His work in you. It may be part of it.

God is working around you. People, timing, and opportunities you cannot see are being arranged by a God who is never late and never confused.

God is working through you. Often the very thing that wounds us becomes the thing that comforts someone else later. Your hardest chapter may become another person’s lifeline.

Practical Ways to Hold On

1) Say it out loud. Speak Romans 8:28 over your situation, even if you whisper it. Faith grows when we declare truth before we feel it.

2) Write down what you are trusting God for. Later, when the answer comes, you will have a record of how He worked.

3) Look back at past seasons. Think of a time something painful eventually led to something good. Let that memory strengthen your trust for today.

4) Stay connected. Do not walk through turmoil alone. Share what you are facing with a trusted friend, pastor, or prayer partner.

5) Keep taking the next faithful step. You do not need to understand the whole plan. You only need to trust the One who does.

A Prayer for When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are never absent from my story. Today I bring You my disappointment, my questions, and the things I do not understand. I confess that some days it is hard to see how any of this could work together for good. Help me trust Your character when I cannot trace Your plan. Remind me that nothing is wasted in Your hands, not the tears, not the waiting, and not the unexpected turns. Strengthen my heart to love You through every season, and give me peace that goes beyond what I can explain. I believe You are still working, even now. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

You Are Still Held

Whatever has gone wrong, whatever you did not see coming, God is still God. He is still good, still faithful, and still weaving your life into something you will one day recognize as His handiwork. Hold onto Romans 8:28 today. The story is not over, and the One writing it has never lost control of the pen.
