I had a song on repeat today: “Fear Is Not Welcome” by Brian Courtney Wilson.
I wasn’t looking for a sermon. I was just driving. But that title kept working on me, because of what it assumes that fear is a visitor, not a resident. That it shows up at the door, and I get to decide whether it comes in and makes itself comfortable.
Most of us have been letting it in without even checking who’s knocking.
Fear didn’t come from God
Paul writes it plainly:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7, KJV)
Read that as a process of elimination. If the dread you’re carrying didn’t come from God, then it doesn’t get to speak for God. That anxious voice telling you it’s going to fall apart, you’re not going to make it, you’re on your own that’s not a prophecy. That’s just a loud guest.
And notice what God did give: power, love, and a sound mind. A settled mind. Not a mind that has all the answers, but one that isn’t ruled by what it doesn’t know.
What to do when fear shows up anyway
David didn’t pretend to be fearless. He just knew what to do with it:
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” (Psalm 56:3, KJV)
What time I am afraid. Not if. He expected it. Faith isn’t the absence of fear — it’s what you reach for when fear arrives.
God said the same thing to Joshua, and gave him the reason: “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:9, KJV)
The command isn’t be brave because you’re strong. It’s be brave because you’re not alone.
Faith rests on something true
Here’s the part that holds it all up. Faith isn’t positive thinking. It isn’t talking yourself into a better mood. Faith stands on a Person and on facts about Him.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6, KJV). Not a good idea — the truth. And He promised that knowing the truth is what actually sets us free (John 8:32).
So when fear starts telling its story, you don’t have to argue with your feelings. You answer it with what’s true:
- The cross already happened. The debt is paid.
- The tomb is already empty. Death lost.
- He already said He’d never leave you. He hasn’t broken a promise yet.
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.” (1 John 4:18, KJV)
Fear gets evicted not by effort, but by love that’s already proven.
Say it out loud today
Whatever you’re facing this week — the diagnosis, the bills, the phone call you’re dreading, the future you can’t see — you are allowed to tell fear it isn’t welcome here.
Not because the thing isn’t real. Because God is realer.
Walk in faith today. One step, one prayer, one true thing at a time. He’s already there where you’re headed.
